Abiding means to stay in the knowledge. Without gaining knowledge through self-verification, it cannot become stable. Initially, forgetting may occur, but this is natural. The practice of remembrance is recommended to address this issue. For helping in remembrance, you can use reminders. You can also spend more time on contemplation and spiritual activities such as satsangs, going to ashrams, watching spiritual videos, etc. This act of remembering will naturally lead to transformative effects. There will be greater peace, bliss and satisfaction in life. It is essential to note that there will be no miraculous occurrences. Knowledge itself is the greatest miracle.

At the heart of all spiritual teachings lies a profound truth: the knower of existence is the same as existence itself. The idea that the experiencer is different from the experience is a misconception we carry due to our ignorance. This distintion fades away when we understand the essence of our being. This realization, when deeply understood, is the ultimate knowledge. There is nothing more beyond this truth.

+ +

The path of knowledge leads you directly to the essential knowledge that the knower and known are one. The path of knowledge is a subtractive path. We do not need to add new knowledge. We just need to remove the layers of ignorance. Once the ignorance is gone, only truth remains. The truth is the realization that you are not separate from existence. You are the very essence of existence. Once you grasp this, nothing more is needed.

What is Existence?

+

Existence is all that is. It is all-encompassing. It includes:

+ + + +

Why is Existence?

+

The nature of existence is such that it has no cause. If a cause exists, it must already be part of the existence. Cause and effect are phenomena within existence, not explanations for it. Existence contains all reasons and purposes; it itself has no purpose.

+ +

How Did Existence Come Into Being?

+

Existence has no beginning. Processes and events occur within existence. They cannot be outside existence by definition. If a process exists ourside of existence, it becomes part of the existence. We observe processes within existence but not a process that creates it.

+ +

When Did Existence Start?

+

Existence is timeless. Time is a construct within existence, not a framework for it. The concept of time implies a clock and an observer. However, both are within existence. To believe existence has a start or end in time is a blind belief, as it assumes an observer outside existence, which is contradictory.

+ +

Where is Existence?

+

Existence is not located anywhere. Instead locations exist within existence. To assume a place for existence implies a larger existence containing that place. Existence is the container of all places. It itself is not in place.

+ +

Who is Existence?

+

Existence is impersonal. It is not a person or a being. It contains individuals as appearances within itself. Projecting personal qualities onto existence is a limited view.

+ +

How Many Existences Are There?

+

By definition, there can only be one existence. If multiple existences are assumed, they collectively form one larger existence. The apparent multiplicity of forms arises within one whole existence.

+ +

Analysis

+

Existence transcends the dualities of true and false. Even the false exists, making it part of existence. So, existence is beyond duality. Existence is fundamental and contains all other qualities. If something is considered more fundamental, it must also be the part of existence. Existence is one and indivisible. To grasp its essence, one must look beyond concepts, forms and dualities. It is the foundation of all experiences and the context within which everything arises and dissolves.

+ +

Studying existence is non-trivial. Language is inadequate to capture the essence of existence. Illusion cannot explain existence. Existence is called as emptiness. But it is not empty in the sense of void. It is full of experiences but devoid of substance. It lacks attributes. Since it is empty, there remains nothing to know, and we call it unknowable. It is called unknowable because there is nothing to know in the existence. Change gives rise to illusions. Illusion requires substance to manifest. Complete emptiness cannot generate illusion, and illusion does not generate itself. There are no external processes creating illusions. Change itself does not exist, only potential exists. This potential manifests as change, which gives rise to illusions. At the core of existence is potential. Emptiness is devoid of all attributes but holds potential. This potential cannot cause anything real but manifests as change, leading to illusions we perceive.

Experience is an aspect of existence that appears to us. It is termed as "appearance" because we never perceive existence as it truly is. Instead, we perceive a distorted version limited by our senses. Experiences emerge from non-substantial possibilities and are not the essence of what truly exists. The existence itself manifests as experience, but due to the limitations of sensory instruments, this manifestation is inherently distorted.

+ +

Experiences are not reality but perceptions limited by senses. It can take infinite forms depending on the type and capacity of the sensory instruments. They are in a state of perpetual change. Some change rapidly, some slowly. However, all experiences are impermanent and false. They arise from an infinite ocean of potential. Their true nature, like the experiencer, is emptiness. At the core, experience and experiencer are one - the same existence manifesting as both.

+ +

Most experiences are mediated by the senses, which limit the infinite potential to finite perceptions at any given time. Still the stream of experiences is infinite and ever-flowing. They do not occur within the confines of time. Time itself is an experience. It is logically impossible to determine the beginning or end of any experience. Also, experience exists without a specific cause. Attempts to identify a cause lead to circular reasoning, as the cause itself becomes another experience. There is no definitive process by which experiences manifest. If a process were defined, it too would become part of the experience. Similarly, experiences do not belong to a specific place. Instead, places arise within experiences.

+ +

People and creatures are experiences that view one existence from countless perspectives. While experiences may appear numerous, they are fundamentally one. The illusion of multiplicity arises from the interplay of senses and memory. Without memory, there can be no experience, as memory provides the structure that gives meaning to sensory impressions. Change is perceived through comparison with stored memory. Without memory, there can be no perception of change. Illusion does not imply the absence of existence but rather a misinterpretation of what is. When conditioning is dropped, it becomes evident that there are only appearances. Change are illusions rooted in memory and sensory processes.

+ +

The essence of experience is emptiness. Experiences arise from infinite potential within emptiness. They persist momentarily due to memory, giving illusion of stability and meaning. Time itself is a byproduct of this persistence in memory. Manifested experiences are limited structures within infinite possibilities. Without these limitations, there would be no discernible experience. They provide a sense of meaning, although illusory, through interrelated patterns. Thus, experiences are manifestations of infinite potential, mediated by senses and memory, and are illusory. Their essence is emptiness.

We step into existence by dividing it into two conceptual parts for study: the experiencer and the experience.

+ +

The experiencer is the aspect of existence that knows everything. It cannot be experienced because it is the one experiencing. If it could be experienced, it would no longer remain the experiencer. The experiencer is entirely non-experiential and is not an object. It is the witness of all objects.

+ +

The experiencer does not change. If it did, it would become an experience, not the experiencer. It has no boundaries or shape. If it did, it would become experience and no longer the experiencer. Similarly, the experiencer is timeless, without beginning or end. Any start or end would be witnessed, making the experiencer already present. It has no cause, as any cause would already require the experiencer to witness it.

+ +

There is only one experiencer. The notion of multiple experiencers is logically and experientially invalid. Also, the experiencer has no location. Any attempt to locate it would turn it into an experience. There is no process that gives rise to the experiencer. Any such process would require witnessing. Moreover, the experiencer is not a person. Personalities are experiences. The experiencer is beyond them.

+ +

The experiencer permeates all experiences as their background. It is present here and now, essential to existence itself. It is indivisible, without parts and is the very essence of existence. The experiencer is absolute emptiness. All that changes is false. The experiencer, being changeless, is the ultimate truth. It is the pure existence.

+ +

The experiencer is unknowable as an object or experience. It cannot be known through sensory means. It is known by being itself. This self-illumination is called awareness. This awareness confirms the experiencer's presence. The experiencer and experience are inseparable. Neither can exist without the other. The experiencer is the ground of all experiences. It is devoid of qualities. Descriptions are only negative, indicating what it is not. It is beyond attributes and form.

On the path of knowledge, direct experience and logic are the foundation for true understanding. They are essential because they lead to clarity and truth, while reliance on anything else often results in misinformation and ignorance.

+ +

Direct experience is the most reliable way to truly know something because it eliminates the possibility of error or misinterpretation. For instance, if you want to understand the taste of an apple, you need to bite into it yourself. No amount of detailed description can replace the personal experience of tasting it. Logic allows us to analyze, infer and derive conclusions based on what we already know through experience. However, logic must always be on the foundation of direct experience to remain trustworthy.

+ +

We often confuse knowledge with information. Information comes from a variety of sources: books, teachers, parents, friends, media, government authorities, etc. However, information is not synonymous with knowledge. Knowledge arises when information is verified through direct experience and sound logic. Without verification, we risk accepting false as truth. Therefore, it is crucial to be skeptical about any information, no matter the source. Critical thinking and personal verification are very important on the path of knowledge. It requires effort, patience and a willingness to question even deeply held beliefs.

Contemplation should be a daily practice. Begin by calming the mind for 2-3 minutes. You can ask for help from Gurufield by saying a prayer in any polite and respectful language. Gurufield is the collective essence of all masters. First, introduce yourself to Gurufield. Mention the name of your path and your Guru. Then, state your dedication to the path of knowledge and request assistance.

+ +

Clearly define the subject of contemplation and ensure to stay focussed on it. Recall the relevant teachings. Then, check how the teachings align with your direct experiences. Also, use logical reasoning to evaluate the teachings. Analyze the subject using the seven questions mentioned in the Listening section. Then, identify the implications of your findings and summarize your conclusions. Make sure to review your arguments and logic for consistency and accuracy.

+ +

After contemplation, sit quietly for some time observing any thoughts that arise. Thank Guru and Gurufield for their guidance and support. Make sure you are convinced of the truth of the teachings. If any questions arise during contemplation, note them and ask your Guru for support.

I am the experience. I am the whole universe. There is no division between what I am and what is here. I am, and the experiences are appearing to me. This is our direct experience. Experience is what appears, and the experiencer is that to which it appears. The relationship between experience and the experiencer is of oneness. They are not separate. They are two aspects of a singular existence. This understanding is not a state of mind but a realization of unity. When the division between experience and the experiencer dissolves, what remains is oneness.

+ +

Oneness cannot be achieved through effort. It is always present, independent of anything else. Letting go of effort allows oneness to be recognized. We cannot unify experience and the experiencer. We can only realize that they are already unified. By discarding ignorance, we see that oneness has always been there.

+ +

The oneness of experience and the experiencer is evident in direct experience. It is impossible to isolate experience as an independent entity or to separate the experiencer as a distinct observer. There is only experiencing which is oneness itself. Oneness does not come and go. Appearances may change, but experiencing is constant. Appearances are empty, and the observer of appearances is equally empty. This emptiness is oneness. Experience and the experiencer are inseparable. Thus, they are one.

+ +

To see oneness, one must be grounded in the experiencer. Oneness cannot be perceived without self-realization. While objects my seem separated by distance, I am not the object. I am the experiencer, and the experience is not separate from me. Experiencer and experience arise simultaneously. There is no time. There is only experiencing. Both experience and the experiencer are infinite. No boundary exists to separate them. In oneness, nothing truuly changes. Change is an illusion created by memory. Oneness includes the illusion of change as part of the experience. Therefore, even the concept of change dissolves. Oneness transcends conceptual dualities such as static versus dynamic or time versus timelessness. It embodies all these and yet it is beyond them. Using the language of duality makes it sound paradoxical, but silence suffices to express oneness.

+ +

The perceived division between experiencer and experience arises from mental activity. Awareness reveals the truth that there is no division. By including the dividing activity of the mind as part of the experience, only experiencing remains. This state is not devoid of mental activity. It just loses its grip. Division is only a thought, and oneness cannot be divided. Asking where experience happes reveals that there is no distinct location for it. Experience encompasses the entire world and is found wherever the experiencer is. There is no separation betwenn experience and the experiencer. The realization of this truth is effortless.

+ +

Logic also points to the unity of experience and the experiencer. If they were two separate realities, they would be independent and incapable of interacting. The observed complete contact between the experiencer and experience confirms their unity. Experience occurs on the experiencer, and this interdependence reveals their oneness. Since experience is impermanent and dependent, it is ultimately false. What remains is the experiencer. As experience and experiencer cannot be established independently, the resolve into one category - oneness.

+ +

This is the end of knowledge. Further exploration of the illusion is optional. The essence of knowledge here is not accumulation but realization.

On the path of knowledge, the journey begins with curiosity. We uncover the nature of reality by questioning. To seek knowledge, we must first learn to ask meaningful and valid questions. It is a way of sharpening our minds and deepening our introspection. There are seven types of questions that serve as the foundation for exploring any subject. These questions help us dissect even the most complex topics in a structured way.

  10. +
  11. Who: This question identifies the subject.
  12. +
  13. How many: This question helps us count.

To make progress on the path of knowledge, it is essential to ask valid questions that are clear, relevant and focussed on the subject. Questioning is a powerful tool for introspection. They help us clear mental clutter. Without questioning, the mind becomes stagnant and dull.

When all non-essential aspects are removed, what remains is the essence. By discarding the unnecessary, the true nature is revealed. The true nature cannot be removed; otherwise, nothing remains. If something can be changed, it is unnecessary. It is not the essential element. To find our essential nature, we must discard all that is unnecessary.

+ +

All experiences change, but the experiencer remains unchanging. Therefore, the experiencer is the essence. The statement "I exist" is the most certain truth. If "I am" is the most certain truth, it must refer to something unchanging. As we have already established, the experiencer is the only constant. Thus, I am the experiencer. Realizing this is self-realization, where the ultimate truth is understood to be oneself.

+ +

Essentially, I am the existence itself. All that comes and goes is non-essential. While all experiences come and go, the experiencer remains. Anything experienced is an illusion. Existence's nature is the experiencer. The experiencer is also referred to as "I".

+ +

Another way to arrive at this realization is negation. By discarding what is unnecessary, we identify the essence. "I am the objects" can be denied. Many believe that "I am the body". But the body changes over time. Despite these changes, "I" remains constant. Sensations, thoughts and emotions come and go, but "I" remains. Memories change, but forgetting memories does not diminish "I". Instead, "I" is the one who forgets. By discarding all these, only the experiencer remains which is the true "I".

+ +

Objects, including the body, are labeled as "mine" due to circumstances. However, they are impermanent and non-essential. The constructs of "me" and "mine" are survival tools. They serve a functional purpose but are not the essence. The belief in "I" stems largely from indoctrination. What we have been told about ourselves shapes this belief, but it does not define the experiencer. While experiences are part of the existence and arise within the experiencer, they are not the essential nature. Experiences are appearances, whereas the experiencer is the true essence.

+ +

Thus, there is no individual "I". The true nature is the experiencer. Everything is part of existence, but nothing specific is uniquely "I" or "mine". This realization transforms understanding, though daily life continues as usual.

+ +

Humans possess the unique ability to recognize "I am the seer". The state of knowing oneself as the experiencer is called Awareness. Most humans lack this awareness due to ignorance. Awareness naturally arises with self-knowledge, illuminating the distinction between the experiencer and the experiences. Abiding in awareness involves consistently recognizing oneself as the experiencer. By remembering this knowledge, one naturally abides in the state of presence.

+ +

The truth is ever-present and unchanging. It requires no external rituals or practices. Dropping false identification reveals the light within. This is called enlightenment.
